If you are struggling to pay your electric and gas bills, you are not alone. Recently, I called the United Illuminating Company for a client and explained that he is living solely on Social Security and cannot afford his electric bill. It did take a few minutes to get through to the customer service representative but once I did she told me that I would have to provide proof of his income and if I did, he would be given a discount. I emailed the proof, called back and confirmed they received it. All in all, it only took about 15 minutes and now he is on a low income discount rate and is saving some money for other essentials. Every dollar counts when you are living on a fixed income.
The utility companies also offers other help such as matching payment programs, budget billing and medical protection. You just have to call and ask what they can do for you in your specific circumstances.
